The Power of Consumer Focus in Healthcare Innovation with Joseph O'Brien, Head of Sales for LG Digital Health

HIMSS conferences provide invaluable insights and shape the future direction of healthcare initiatives.

In this episode, Joseph O'Brien, Head of Sales for LG Digital Health, explains how his company aims to improve patient experience and address care gaps by leveraging its presence in healthcare facilities, particularly through inpatient room TVs. He highlights the importance of HIMSS in shaping their focus and strategy, emphasizing the increasing relevance of "hospital at home" care models, as LG Health plans to extend its solutions to the home setting, aligning with evolving regulations and the desires of aging populations. Despite LG's consumer-oriented reputation, Joe underscores that they prioritize patient-centered approaches to enhance healthcare experiences, especially during transitions from hospital to home. He also encourages healthcare systems to explore partnerships for tailored solutions in AI, interoperability, and home-based care.

Tune in to become an active member in shaping the future of healthcare!

[00:00:03] Hey everybody, welcome back to the Outcomes Rocket. Saul Marquez here. I'm so excited to

[00:00:07] have Joe O'Brien with us, head of sales for LG Digital Health. Joe, thanks for joining us.

[00:00:12] Thanks Saul for having me.

[00:00:13] Pleasure. HIMSS 2024, we are here. It's live, it's bustling. Tell us a little bit about LG

[00:00:20] Digital Health, what you guys do and what main stakeholder in the health system you guys are

[00:00:24] helping.

[00:00:25] Yeah, great way to start off. So we're very exciting at LG Digital Health. We've been at

[00:00:28] it for nearly two years now. The aha moment for LG came as we realized we had a very strong

[00:00:33] presence already in the health systems, long-term care facilities with our TVs, right? In the

[00:00:38] patient room. And so with the core gaps in care around patient experience, provider shortages,

[00:00:45] staff burnout, it was our opportunity to get in, dive in head first into the digital health space

[00:00:50] and create clinical applications to address those gaps in care by activating those in-patient room

[00:00:55] TVs for digital interactions between the provider and the patient. It's a starting point for us and

[00:01:00] really have a lot of big plans to go beyond the health system walls.

[00:01:04] Love it. Yeah, you know that health system real estate inside of the rooms, it's a big deal. And

[00:01:10] already having a footprint there, what a smart move to say, how can we help? How can we do more?

[00:01:15] Here at HIMSS 2024, there's a lot of talk, a lot of bustle, a lot of words like AI and

[00:01:21] innovation. What's been the biggest aha moment for you here? And why is it that you guys chose

[00:01:27] to come? Well, HIMSS is the conference of all conferences in healthcare. It's got staying

[00:01:32] power and a lot of reputations in terms of the access, the thought leadership that takes place,

[00:01:37] and really just the conversations. It's very enlightening for us and we learn quite a bit.

[00:01:41] We're always seeking education around our product, but also what new challenges systems are facing.

[00:01:47] For us, it reinforces what we're already doing and where our focus should be. I think one of

[00:01:52] the key takeaways I've found is the hospital at home is really more closer to a reality than

[00:01:57] maybe we previously thought a year ago or two years ago. Hey, that's really interesting, Joe.

[00:02:02] Help us understand, right? The presence in the hospitals, obviously in the homes,

[00:02:07] what kind of involvement or plans do you guys have at LG Health around that?

[00:02:11] Yeah, so we're looking really to lean into health systems to help build our roadmap with

[00:02:16] clinical feedback, understanding where there are short-term gaps are, long-term gaps are. But

[00:02:22] it seems the track is leading towards the home, right? And now regulations, state regulations

[00:02:26] are starting to back those initiatives. And so it's really, the timing is now. With the clinical

[00:02:31] feedback that we're developing with systems in the patient room, we can apply that to the home

[00:02:36] and make that a reality. As we know, baby boomers are aging. They want to be in the home. They want

[00:02:40] to have their connectivity with their providers in their space. And so we feel confident at LG

[00:02:46] that we've got that footprint to make that a reality. You think of a brand like LG, you think

[00:02:51] consumer. And a big part that's been missing in healthcare is that consumer-first approach.

[00:02:58] Can you comment on that? Yeah. I mean, it's even we get caught up in the provider and staff kind

[00:03:03] of workflows, right? And making their lives easier, but it all flows back to the patient

[00:03:06] experience. So that has a ripple effect across the system and into the realities of a consumer,

[00:03:12] right? As far as how we engage with our phones, how we engage with everyone in the digital space,

[00:03:17] but primarily that healthcare one-to-one focus is really an emphasis that we are really looking to

[00:03:23] hone in on and make sure that patient experience is not disrupted once they leave the health system

[00:03:28] and go to the home. So a lot of focus is on that transition from discharge to the home and how

[00:03:33] we stay connected to the patient. Love it. Thank you, Joe. Everybody out there that didn't get a

[00:03:38] chance to be here at HIMSS is looking for those insights and calls to action. So what would you

[00:03:44] leave our audience with as far as call to action and what's the best place they could learn more

[00:03:48] about you and LG Digital Health? Yeah, I think a call to action is that you're probably a lot

[00:03:52] closer than you think to some of these projects that you're looking at around AI or interoperability,

[00:03:58] the hospital home. So continue down that path, look for partners that are already you're familiar

[00:04:04] with that have a plan to make that a custom fit for your system and your environment,

[00:04:09] your communities. And you can learn more about LG Digital Health on all our socials. We're active at

[00:04:14] a lot of conferences. And so yeah, looking forward to engaging and to do the conversations

[00:04:18] this week at HIMSS. Awesome. Joe, thank you very much. And everybody listening and watching us

[00:04:23] today, make sure you check out the show notes where we'll have ways that you could get in touch with

[00:04:27] Joe and his team at LG Digital Health. The opportunities now, as he said, so take advantage

[00:04:32] of those links below to get in touch. Joe, thanks for being with us. Thanks, Al, appreciate it.
