The healthcare industry is poised for a significant shift as AI, particularly agentic AI, gains momentum and venture capital.

In this episode, Dr. Stefano Bini, a professor of orthopedics at the University of California, San Francisco, talks about the renewed excitement in the venture world due to AI technologies and a potential boom reminiscent of 1997 and 2008. He highlights how Nvidia's presentation has triggered many leaders to re-evaluate and become more aggressive in their AI implementation strategies. Dr. Bini explains that the future involves small, task-specific agentic AI models, not the large language models, to amplify human capabilities by automating routine tasks, allowing professionals to manage more complex operations. He also emphasizes the importance of networking at conferences like JPM Health by being curious and asking questions instead of pitching, aiming for discovery and finding the perfect partners, rather than focusing on promoting one's company.

Tune in and learn how AI is reshaping healthcare strategies and the best approach for networking at industry events!

[00:00:30] All right, everybody. I am here with the amazing Dr. Stefano Bini. Yes. How are you doing Stefano? I'm doing very well. Better for seeing you, my friend. Hey man, always great. So we're right here. We are where the action's happening. We are. Powell Street and Post, right outside of us. That is why the action's happened, because we are here. That's the definition. That's right. That's right. Where the JPM Health Conference is happening. There it is, right in front of us. And we're walking right to the S. Most of the things happen outside.

[00:01:00] A lot of things happen outside of you. Yeah. JPMorgan. A lot of events, a lot of networking. It's one of the most exciting places to be if you're in this digital health, but also primarily biotech and pharma and healthcare space, because everybody you need to meet is already here. It's a matter of connecting with them. That's what it's about. And by the way, folks, Dr. Bini is professor of orthopedics at UCSF here. And so we're talking insights and predictions for healthcare.

[00:01:30] Talk to us about an insight or two that you picked up at the event. Look, I think that the venture world is super excited. They're seeing a lot more money flooding the market, especially with the AI-related technologies. And they're talking about a 1997, 2008 sort of boom for the next year and a half. And so that's exciting. Now, let's see if it actually happens. It plays out, but I've heard that from more than one person. And the other thing is that there was a sort of a... Hi!

[00:01:58] There was a particularly insightful and prophetic presentation by NVIDIA at the main conference, and I heard people come out really rethinking or force them to rethink the strategy to be a little more aggressive about including AI. I think a lot of people have been sort of sitting in the sideline. They don't understand how fast it's moving. They assume it's not really going to make a difference yet. It hasn't been proven.

[00:02:23] And yet all data suggests that, no, it's moving quicker than people think, especially around the agentic AI space. So potentially people questioning their strategies and changing things up. Yeah. And this is, I think, what's going to be a big outcome of this particular meeting. For those who attended, a lot of CEOs are here and they're listening specifically for those kinds of insights.

[00:02:46] And I wouldn't be surprised if we'll look back at 2025 as the turning point where people really woke up and smelled the roses and started embracing digital transformation. Now, that said, I also agree that it's not going to happen overnight, but it'll happen at the edges and with specific applications where these agentic technologies in particular,

[00:03:06] this is another big, large model, small task-specific models that are built to execute simple tasks very efficiently, however. And then they're strung together so they can execute complex tasks. And then they're governed by another agent that oversees them. And in the context allows them to take over jobs that are previously done by humans very efficiently.

[00:03:30] So the idea is not to necessarily eliminate humans or get rid of humans, but it's more about how do you amplify their skill set? And the terminology people are using isn't so much augmentation because that implies that the humans are missing something. It's more about how do you think implementing them and giving them, allowing them to be themselves just more effective, more efficient.

[00:03:54] So imagine that you have a job and you can break that job down into like 10 tasks. And that in the background, there's a specific agent that does each of those tasks for you and helps you craft like 90% of it or most of it. And then what you have to do is ensure it, check it, make sure it's okay. Suddenly your ability to manage 10 clients goes from 10 to 100. There's nothing to 20, it's 10 to 100. That's their goal.

[00:04:24] And that is a promise to all these technologies. There's been plenty of research already that shows that this works quite well. And it's quite different from the anthropic and open AI type large language models that we're all being very scared about. But these are very practical, small, highly precise, task specific, relatively easy to implement. Well, it's certainly a game changer, Stefano. And I appreciate your thoughts. I know you've had a lot of really great meetings here.

[00:04:51] And so I appreciate you sharing some of the insights and also your forecasts for the year. For, you know, to close us out, because I also know you have an Uber to catch. Yeah, next meeting. To the next meeting. And by the way, folks, that's how it is here, right? It's one meeting to the next and it's hot. The conversations are fantastic. For folks that haven't been to the meeting here at JPMorgan Health and are considering coming,

[00:05:19] or maybe they've come and maybe they haven't had sort of the success that they've been looking for. Like what recommendations would you give to them to make the most out of this meeting? If you're here, by the way, let me point out the Waymo. Oh, yeah. Driverless car. I was in one of those earlier. I was appreciating this crazy traffic and doing a very good job of it. Impressing. Look, here's where I see people being successful.

[00:05:45] I helped to sort of shepherd in to this conference. One of my friends from New Zealand hadn't been before. And I saw him do a fantastic job because he would walk into a room and simply start asking questions. Hey, how are you? What do you do? And show interest in other people and be curious. And they will in turn be curious back. But don't forget, you very seldom learn anything when you're talking. Amen to that.

[00:06:12] So the trick at this conference is to go up and just ask questions. You don't have to pitch or sell your company because what's going to happen is you'll meet the person who does the one thing you can't do, and they've already done it. And next thing you're like, my God, that's the perfect partner for me to propel my conference. Yeah, I really do, at least from my perspective, it's really about being open to meeting the person who happens to be next to you at the bar. That's awesome.

[00:06:41] And asking that question, what do you do? What does your company do? As opposed to, hey, let me tell you about my company. It's a different mindset. It's one of a discovery. And this attracts the most interesting, intelligent people in the world in our space. Yep. And you really should come here to absorb. And good things happen when you show interest in other people. So that person may not be interested in your product, but they may know somebody who is.

[00:07:07] And next thing you introduce to the guy that they came with to the party or girl, and next thing you know, you're on your way to a profitable venture with another company. So it's really an amazing place to be. Well, Stefano, dropping massive value as always. I am so glad that we got back together here in your hometown of San Francisco. I'm so fortunate to be here. It's been energizing.

[00:07:35] And just thank you so much for spending a little time with us. And for everybody watching, listening, make sure you check out the show notes to see what Dr. Stefano Beene has coming up soon with his DocSF meeting. If you haven't checked it out. October 3rd. Why don't you plug it real quick? Sure. October 3rd, 2025 in San Francisco. We bring some of the leading thinkers in all the technology spaces that are adjacent to orthopedics and are so specific to musculoskeletal care to show us what we can do,

[00:08:04] what we can go, and what the future looks like. It's amazing. We'll link it up in the show notes below. But Stefano, always a pleasure. My friend. Thank you for coming. Thank you, my friend. Yeah. Come back anytime. Hey, man. I love it. I will. Trust me, I will. By the way, the city's showing really well. Everybody's worried about the city. It's phenomenal. They clean it up pretty well. All right, brother. Take care. We'll see everybody soon.
